NakedPress Organic Liquid Castile Soap offers an ideal alternative to ordinary chemical-based soaps and can be used
anywhere around the home where organic soap is needed.
Unlike chemical-based detergents that carry no scent and can be quite thick, traditional handcrafted Potassium- or Liquid Castile Soaps are naturally runny, but very foamy. Our Liquid Castile Soap is potassium soap and a natural surfactant (surface active agent), made from vegetable oils.
The word Castile soap comes from the fact that this type of soap was first made in the Spanish region of Castile, where most of the olive oil in Spain was grown. Castile soap was traditionally made with olive oil, but we have added coconut oil to the ingredients, as this improves the lather.
This soap is free from the usual foaming agents used in the more commercial liquid soaps, like coco betaine, decyl glucoside, sodium laurel sulphate, free from detergents, thickeners, animal fats (making it suitable for vegans), and preservatives, all known skin irritants, making our base non-allergenic and 100% biodegradable.
Unlike industrially made liquid detergents made from petrochemicals, or coconut derivatives, natural handmade liquid soap made from edible oils is always golden yellow to orange to light green in colour and it may appear “runny”. Do not let this thinner consistency trick you into believing your liquid soap is not concentrated enough, as it is usually foamier than most soap substitutes. You may find some essential oils e.g. Rosemary and Eucalyptus can thicken your base, and some oils like Citrus essential oils can thin your base.
Our liquid soap base has its glycerine retained. Glycerine is a natural humectant or moisturizer, due to its water-building capabilities, that allow it to draw and absorb water from the air. Chemically speaking glycerine is a by-product of the saponification (soap-making) process.
To get a bit technical: In a way, it is a “refuse” of the chemical bonding between the three fatty molecules of oils with the alkali molecule (potassium hydroxide), which leaves the fourth component of the oil molecules (glycerol) unbound and easily extracted from the soap.
In industrial soap making, glycerine is reclaimed from the soap paste, purified and sold as a separate product.
At the end of the soapmaking process, the potassium hydroxide (a processing aid) has been used up and the natural handmade soaps contain all the available glycerol molecules (glycerine), which contribute to its mildness and skin-friendliness.
Traditional handmade soaps all have a pH of between 8-10. Due to the high pH, it contains no preservatives, but should you wish to add any botanicals like aloe vera or herbal extracts it is advisable to add a preservative. This is not needed when adding essential oils.
There is a modern misunderstanding that a chemically based soap substitute is safer & milder on the skin, as it has a lower pH and that a natural & traditionally made soap from vegetable oils is harsher because it has higher pH. The fact is that the pH has no bearing on the mildness or harshness of a soap.
This misunderstanding started with the incorporation of chemicals into the soap-making process, when during and after the 2nd world war, vegetable oils and fats were scarce.
To create a marketing edge over the traditionally made soaps and as these chemicals were naturally acidic in nature, the myth was created that soaps with a lower pH were more gentle on the skin than those with a higher pH.
Soaps manage to cleanse the skin as dirt and oils have a tendency to migrate from a surface of a lower pH (the skin has a pH of around 7) to the higher pH of the soap and it is a fact that skin conditions of thousands of people have improved after changing over from chemical soaps to natural soaps.
Customising your base:
You can leave your base unscented if you suffer from chemical sensitivities or we suggest the addition of 1 to 1.5% of essential oil. Decant and Blend well. If you buy a 1L unit of either of our bases, then for easy blending add a 12ml bottle of essential oil and mix well.
Should you wish to add botanicals and vitamins, we recommend adding a preservative.
IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS PRODUCT IS (PALM OIL FREE):
Please note:
Due to a large amount of olive oil used to make our Liquid Castile Soap and our Hand and Body Wash, you may find that these liquid soaps can go cloudy with a small amount of white sediment when the temperature falls below 15 degrees Celcius. The cloudiness and sediment will disappear as soon as the temperature rises back above 15 degrees. If you are looking for a soap base that does not have this effect, then our shampoo base may be better suited, as it has been made without olive oil.

Personally will not use anything else
By: Colleen on 22 December 2022
Seizing does occur when essential oil is added but in an amber bottle it is fine. My kids (25-30) have always bought Aesop and now prefer the ones I have mixed. I won't use anything else in my bathrooms now. It is more expensive than other liquid soaps, but it is worth it for us. To make for resale I doubt it is worth it, by the time essential oil is added it does become expensive.
